I've got some bad news. There is no Magical Make Money Online E-book. Whatever you have been told is not true. It is, of course, possible to make money online and even become very wealthy but there is a magical™ equation that separates the high earners in this sector from those who don't make money online..
A harsh reality is that most online businesses fail and most people do not make money online. The failure rate has been suggested in various publications as being as high as 90% and often failure occurs within the first few months of start up. This is an incredibly high failure rate. Why is this?
It is my view that:
Most people will not make money online because they don't treat their online business as a real business.
The fact is - your online business is a real business. If you want to make money online it is imperative that you treat it as such, or you will become another statistic.
So, what are some of the main reasons why people don't treat their online business like a real business?
Lack Of Effective Planning
When I am asked by clients to advise them on how to successfully make money online the first thing I will ask to see is their business plan or strategy. I would estimate that around less than 10% of the people I speak to have any actual business plan or strategy for how to make money online. Many people do not even know what that a business plan is. The average online business owner will have performed little (if any) research into online marketing and will have no plan or strategy for their business, nor will they have any time constrained or specific goal for their business. Its no wonder that they are struggling to make money online.
This problem is often not helped by some existing marketers failure to manage their customers expectations by using hyped marketing that promises “plug and play systems†that generate income on auto-pilot. Its easy to make money online they say. The new business owner often buys a make money online system and does little learning or work on it, and when money isn't flowing into their bank accounts overnight as expected, they often simply give up.
But lets imagine that you bought an offline shop as your new business venture. You get up at midday and spend a few hours a week sitting in the shop waiting for people to come in, and maybe a couple of hours learning the retail trade, and then wonder why nobody is visiting your shop. Or maybe you do actually have a goal and want to be a world champion sprinter and win an Olympic gold medal. Will the occasional run on the treadmill give you the strength and conditioning needed to challenge Usain Bolt? Its the same with online business because your online business is a real business, and if you want to make money online then you are expecting people to pay real money to you.
Alice In Wonderland - the make money online business version
People that know me or follow my Facebook page know that I love to read and often like to draw comparisons from books with the reality of business. Have you ever read the book Alice in Wonderland? Its not your everyday business book but theres some great wisdom in it! The following words could easily be a conversation between myself (the cat) and an online business owner (Alice) who is not making money online.
Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to
Alice: I don't much care where.
The Cat: Then it doesn't much matter which way you go.
From this conversational exchange between Alice and the Cat, its clear that if you don't know where you are going, and you don't care enough about where you are going then it doesn't really matter which way you go. In short, if you have no destination or no clearly defined strategy then you are simply going to get lost. The result of that is that you will make no money online and will probably give up in a short period of time.
You need to create a business plan which includes specific goals and you also need to have a clearly defined marketing strategy which you can follow each day to ensure that you do not get lost.
Lack of Commitment/Unmanaged Expectation
The quality of a persons life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor. -Vince Lombardi
In my experience, if you want to be really successful in any profession then you need to commit a minimum of a year to five years to become an “expert†in your field. You can't buy an e-book or a system and be making six figures by next week, or even next month (regardless of what you might read in online marketing promotions). The truth is that its very likely that you won't make money online (or at least you won't be in profit) for the first month or two even if you have a solid strategy. This is normal so be aware of this.
In network and internet marketing (as in any business) you need to commit to learning as much as possible every single day; and to applying the strategies and skills you learn diligently. You need to be building networks, and to taking consistent action that moves you towards your clearly defined goals. It takes time before you start to make money online and become competent. You will make lots of mistakes along the way but it is the small consistent steps that will bring you closer to where you want to be.
In order to be successful and to make money online you need to work hard, be committed and have a desire for success. E-books and programs can only give you the tools and knowledge that you need to succeed but consistent action is what stands between you and success - and there are almost no overnight successes in any industry.
